Jaws of Life Unleashed: Silverton Firefighters Tear Apart a Car for Thrilled Crowd

Firefighters with the Silverton Fire District demonstrated the high-stakes art of vehicle extrication Saturday, using powerful hydraulic tools to methodically tear apart a car in front of a community audience during the “Silverton Emergency Teams and Big Machines” event.

The live demonstration, scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Silverton Fire Main Station, showcased the teamwork and specialized equipment used in real-life crash rescues. Crews employed the “Jaws of Life” and other hydraulic spreaders, cutters, and rams to remove doors, roofs, and other vehicle components, simulating the rapid access needed to reach trapped occupants.

Taylor Alexander, a firefighter with the district, described the operation as a full-team effort.

“We are going to have an entire crew, about 6 people,” said Alexander.

The event, hosted by the Silverton Volunteer Firefighters Association in honor of Roger Louis Brown, featured an array of emergency vehicles, heavy equipment, hands-on activities, and family-friendly displays from noon to 6 p.m. Proceeds supported the Roger Louis Brown Memorial Scholarship and Silverton High School’s CTE Protective Services Program.

Community members watched as firefighters emphasized safety protocols, vehicle stabilization, and coordinated extrication techniques — skills honed through regular training to prepare for highway emergencies in the region. The demonstration highlighted the critical role of first responders and the advanced tools that can mean the difference between life and death in motor vehicle crashes.
