SILVERTON, Ore. — A YouTuber known locally as "Pops" from the PopsRocksPNW community, placed a massive stone and dozens of smaller rocks and gems throughout Silverton neighborhoods aiming to lure residents outdoors for discovery and adventure.
Pops is a dedicated rockhounder and content creator, spent weeks preparing the cache. The centerpiece — a giant, eye-catching stone — anchors the effort alongside polished gems and hidden “finds” tucked along trails, parks and public spots around town.
“I wanted people to get out and explore their own backyard,” Said Pops, “Silverton is full of beauty. Sometimes you just need a little nudge — or a shiny rock — to notice it.”
The initiative is similar to the popular “kindness rocks” tradition but adds a rockhounding twist with natural Oregon specimens like green opal and other local treasures mixed in. Participants who find items are encouraged to share photos online, re-hide them or keep special pieces while replacing them for others.
Neighbors have already begun reporting discoveries. Some posted finds on local social media groups, describing the thrill of spotting a brightly painted rock or a gleaming gem during evening walks or family outings. One parent said the activity turned a routine stroll into a treasure hunt for her children.
Pops project builds on Silverton’s growing reputation for outdoor and nature-based activities. The town, nestled in the Willamette Valley, offers creeks, parks and trails ideal for casual rockhounding. His TikTok and YouTube channel PopsRocksPNW regularly features local finds, helping introduce newcomers to the hobby.
Organizers of similar efforts note that such activities promote physical activity, mindfulness and community connection. In an era of screens and busy schedules, hidden rocks provide low-cost, accessible fun for all ages.

Pops plans to continue stashing items periodically and invites others to join. “It doesn’t have to be fancy,” he said. “Just grab a rock and hide it. You never know whose day you’ll brighten.”
As summer continues, residents can keep eyes peeled while wandering Silverton’s paths. One giant stone and many smaller surprises await those willing to look.
